Klea Katsouyanni

Klea Katsouyanni joined the Department of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics of the University of Athens Medical School in 1981 and is now a Professor in Medical Statistics and Epidemiology in the same department.

She obtained a first degree in Mathematics in 1976 from the University of Patras in Greece, an MSc in Statistics in 1978 from Brunel University, U.K., and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Athens in 1982. She teaches Biostatistics to Medical and Dental School undergraduate students and Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Methods at the postgraduate level. She was one of the faculty members who initiated the postgraduate program in Biostatistics in 1998, run jointly by the Medical School and the Department of Mathematics, and acted as President of the Program Committee for several years. She has worked in Environmental Epidemiology for more than 20 years and is the Coordinator of the APHEA (Air Pollution and Health: a European Approach) network, an E.C. funded project which was established in 1992 and produced results which have contributed to the understanding of the air pollution health effects in Europe and the establishment of legislation for the management of air quality.  She has been a member of several advisory committees, (E.C., W.H.O. etc) in environmental health topics. She has more than 140 publications in peer reviewed journals which have been cited more than 7500 times. She was the Chair of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) 1999 Conference and a member of the ISEE Council between 2000 and 2002. In 2006 she became the recipient of the ISEE John Goldsmith award for sustained and outstanding contributions to the knowledge and practice of Environmental Epidemiology.
