"Impact of Biostatistical Science - Advances in Research: AIDS, Cancer, Environment"
Joan Hu
X. Joan Hu is Professor in Statistics at Simon Fraser University, Canada. Before she joined the University in 2003 as Associate Professor, she was Assistant Professor (1998-2002), Associate Professor (2002-2003) at University of Memphis, and an adjunct faculty member at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (2000-2003). After receiving her BSc in mathematics and MSc in statistics from Peking (Beijing) University, she went on to earn her PhD in statistics at the University of Waterloo. She became a postdoctoral fellow of Steve Lagakos 1996-1997 and then a research scientist under Steve’s supervision at Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research (CBAR) of Harvard 1997-1998. Her statistical research interests include event history data analysis, longitudinal data analysis, missing data, and study design and interim review in clinical trials. She has collaborated with investigators in a variety of research fields, including HIV/AIDS, cancer, public health, reliability, political science and business. She has co-authored eight papers with Steve Lagakos, and happily worked on her first clinical trial, ACTG359, as its PhD statistician mentored closely by Steve. Joan’s honors include the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) University Faculty Award (2003-2008), the Frank Wilcoxon Prize (1998) and the Pierre Robillard Award (1996). She is an elected ISI member (2007) and an elected member of ICSA Board of Directors (2010-2012).
