Lagakos' Symposium
"Impact of Biostatistical Science - Advances in Research: AIDS, Cancer, Environment"
Guadalupe Gomez
Guadalupe Gómez (Ph.D., 1986, Columbia University) is Professor of Statistics at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona (Spain) and Chair of the Inter-university Master's Degree in Statistics and Operations Research. Prof. Gómez has held different positions at the UPC. She has chaired, among others, the Graduate Program of the Statistics and Operations Research Department (2003-2008) and has been responsible for International Relations of the School of Mathematics and Statistics (1992-1998). Prof. Gómez has been the President of the Spanish Region of the International Biometric Society (IBS) (1999-2000), Elected Member of the Council of the IBS (2000-03) and has served at several committees of the IBS, such as the Editorial Advisory Committee of Biometrics (1994-2001), the Strategic Plan Committee (2003-09) and the Award Committee (2002-08). She has been Executive Editor of the Statistics and Operations Research Transactions (SORT) journal since 2003 and Associate Editor of the Statistical Modelling Journal since 2005. She has also been a member of the Scientific Committee of several conferences, such as the 22nd International Workshop on Statistical Modelling held in Barcelona (Spain) in 2007, the 3rd International Conference of EMR-IBS, held in Corfu (Greece) in 2005, and the 25th conference of the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics held in Leiden (Holland) in 2004. Her research interests are in the areas of survival analysis under complex censoring schemes focusing on interval-censored data, doubly-censored data, competing risks endpoints and composite time to event endpoints. Her research is often motivated by problems that Dr. Gomez encounters in her collaborations with the Fundació Lluita contra la SIDA (AIDS Foundation) and the Institute Guttmann of Neurorehabilitation. She leads the group of survival analysis -GRASS- at UPC and has been since 1996 the Principal Investigator of its public grants from the Catalan and Spanish Government. Prof. Gómez has authored or coauthored more than 100 papers in statistical or medical journals. Her scientific collaboration with Prof. Lagakos dates back to 1989 when he first invited her to spend four months at the Dept. of Biostatistics of the Harvard School of Public Health. She has visited the Department several times since. Thanks to these collaborations they have published together two papers, one in Statistics in Medicine (2003) and the other in Biometrics (1994) and organized the First Barcelona Workshop on Survival Analysis in 2002.
