"Impact of Biostatistical Science - Advances in Research: AIDS, Cancer, Environment"
Dianne Finkelstein
Dianne Finkelstein is currently the Director of Biostatistics at Massachusetts General Hospital (a group of 36 people including 12 PhD and 6 MA statisticians). She has been on the faculty of Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School for 27 years. Dr. Finkelstein completed her PhD in Biostatistics at University of Michigan in 1981. She has made contributions to biostatistics methodology in survival analysis, carcinogenicity testing, clinical trials, and epidemiology. She has had almost uninterrupted grant support for her research for the past 20 years. She has served as an editor for three major statistical methods journals, including Biometrics, for which she was an editor for over 20 years. She has been active in the statistical organizations, including the proposal and development of an award from CCOPS for outstanding female statisticians, the FN David award to ensure that women would be recognized and awarded more by our societies. On the basis of her contributions to statistical methodology as well as medical research, she was elected a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 1994. Her citation reads ``For leadership in AIDS and cancer clinical trials, for contributions to the analysis of survival data, for leadership on U.S. government advisory and review panels, and for service to the profession''. In 2004, Dr. Finkelstein was promoted to Professor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, an honor that has been achieved by only a handful of statisticians
